POSTED MARCH 1, 2012

In Art Class the children are learning what it means to be an “Illustrator”, (in simple terms, to draw a picture to represent the words we read or hear). This month I am having all the classes from kindergarten through 8th grade illustrate various phrases from one of my favorite songs “What a Wonderful World” - I see trees of green, red roses too, I see them bloom for me and you and I think to myself what a wonderful world. I see skies of blue, clouds of white, the bright blessed day, the dark sacred night and I think to myself what a wonderful world. The K-1 class has just completed drawing the trees of green. These were done in a somewhat abstract form with green swirling paint in the background and colorful blossoms on the branches, which were applies by using paint shapers.

Several of the older children experienced one of the newest art media popular with kids today - duct tape. We illustrated the red roses phrase of the song by constructing 3-dimentional duct tape roses. The kids found this to be a fun but very sticky and challenging experience. Jon Hubener proved to be a master of the technique and was very helpful with the other students. Several of the roses were sent home for moms to receive on Valentine’s Day. The 2nd and 3rd graders just completed illustrating the “skies of blue and clouds of white”. The 4th and 5th graders are working on the “bright blessed day” section of the song with lots of warm colors, while the 2nd and 3rd graders are painting the “dark sacred night” in cool tones of blue. The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky, will be painted by Mrs. Williams’ K - 1 class, (ask them to tell you about Roy G. Biv). Be watching are hallway in the next month or so when our whole song will be Illustrated and on display for all to enjoy.
